The Search menu appears to the left of the Top bar directly to the right of the Module selector of the Main menu.

  • Typically, the Search menu in the Top bar is collapsed, i.e. only represented by the magnifying glass icon.

  • To enter a search term, the input area must first be expanded.

    • Clicking on the magnifying glass icon toggles the status of the Search menu between expanded and collapsed.

    • To expand, press Ctrl+Shift+F, which appears as a placeholder text for the input field when expanded.

    • To collapse, press the Esc key when the input field for the search term has the focus.

      • Any search term entered will be deleted.

The focus is automatically set in the input field when it is opened so that a search term can be entered immediately.

The Main menu displays all results in the input field for the search term immediately after each change (i.e. by pressing a button if necessary) instead of the previously displayed menu items.

  • The regular Main menu only reappears when the search term is completely deleted or the Search menu is closed.

    • Clicking on the X symbol to the right of the input field for the search term can have two different effects:

      • If there is a search term in the input field, it will be deleted.

      • If the input field is empty (except for the placeholder text), the Search menu is closed.

IMPORTANT◄ The Search menu searches all menu items available in the login context regardless of the Module selector.

Example:

  • The string sear was entered as the search term here.

  • Three results are menu items relating to the 'Data Platform' module.

  • The selected result is a menu item from the ‘My Data Apps’ module that is based on a specific configuration (e.g. a portal).

How is the result list created?

  • The Module selector (to the left of the magnifying glass icon in the Data Platform screenshot) does not restrict the search and does not prioritise the results.

  • The underlining of letters in the name for the menu item in the results list confirms the match with the string provided as a search term.

  • The Search menu accepts every menu item whose name (or the assigned localisation) contains all the letters of the search term in the given order as a result. Additional characters are ignored.

  • Menu nodes also appear in the results list, i.e. menu items whose sole function is to contain child menu items, creating a hierarchical ‘menu tree’.

How are results selected?

If at least one match is available, the first entry in the results list appears automatically selected (shaded green).

  • The selection in the results list can be moved up and down using the cursor keys (↑/↓). In the screenshot, the second result was selected in this way.

  • A menu item selected in the results list can be opened by pressing the Enter key.

  • Click on a menu item in the results list to select and open it in one step.

What happens when I open a menu item?

  • In most cases, opening a menu item causes a specific view to appear in a view slot of the main window.
    But there are also exceptions:

    • When a menu node is opened, it is expanded in the Main menu so that the child menu items appear within the results list, where they can be selected and opened.

    • Menu items for Client workflows in the Main menu trigger custom processes. Opening a view is possible, but not necessarily the case.

    • The ‘Help’ menu node contains two menu items (“Manual” and ‘Start product tour’), which also do not occupy any view slots when opened.

  • Opening a menu item can cause the Search menu to close.

  • The Module selector is adjusted if necessary (depending on the menu item opened).

  • When opening a menu item that is directly linked to a view, the main menu displays the associated item as a selection when the view is opened.

    • If necessary, the menu tree is expanded for this purpose and the open menu item is made visible by vertical scrolling.
