Print service

The print service facilitates Zebra printing by starting a service on the user's computer that receives Zebra print jobs from Lobster Data Platform / Orchestration and automatically passes them to the default printer that has been set.

If the print service has not yet been started, it can be initialized with the button Start print service (see below for the necessary requirements).

(1) Number of print jobs and the print service.

(2) Number of seconds since the last communication with the print service.

(3) Select default printer: Choose which printer to use.

(4) Always ask: If this checkbox is active, the selected default printer is ignored and the user is asked for the printer each time.

If the print service is started, an icon (of a printer) appears on the user computer in the notification field of the task bar (system tray). If no default printer was specified, it will be asked for the first time the program is started. By right-clicking on the icon, the default printer can be changed, the setting Always ask can be changed, or the program can be closed. These settings are the same as those that can be made within the print service of Lobster Data Platform / Orchestration. They are also stored locally on the user's computer and are preset the next time the system is started.

The status of the print service can be accessed via the Print service settings menu:

This entry can also be hidden, but Administration – System – Print service must be deactivated in the role permissions.

Requirements for starting the print service:

There must be a Java installation that supports the JNLP Java Web Start Protocol. For example Oracle Java 8, or a free implementation like IcedTea-Web.

During the initial installation, several security-relevant questions are asked and must be confirmed accordingly (whereby the target URL should be checked).
